Quebec opposition wants action on SC paper

May 18, 2016  By Cindy Macdonald

The leader of Quebec’s official opposition party is calling on Premier Philippe Couillard to take action on countervailing duties applied to supercalendered paper exports to the United States. Sylvain Gaudreault, member of provincial parliament for Jonquière and leader of the opposition, says the duty is threatening the future of two mills in his territory.

Two mills belonging to Resolute Forest Products, at Kenogami and Dolbeau-Mistassini, are paying a tax of 18 per cent on supercalendered paper exported to the United States. Gaudreault says the situation costs the each of the mills more than $1 million per month.
