Domtar is investing of $36 million for the installation of a second biomass-based generating unit with a power output of 18 MW at its Windsor mill in Quebec.
This investment will improve the energy efficiency of the mill while reducing production costs. The mill installed a 30-MW generating unit in 2001.
“With its two generating units, the Windsor mill will become one of the major producers of renewable energy in the Eastern Townships. Our total production capacity will reach nearly 50 MW and will allow us to feed [to he grid] the equivalent of the annual energy consumption of 12,800 single-family dwellings,” explains Éric Ashby, director of the Windsor mill.
Construction work on the infrastructure for the generating unit will begin mid-June, and will be spread out over a period of nearly one year. The new generating unit will is expected to enter into service in the summer of 2017.
Domtar produces a wide variety of fiber-based products including communication, specialty and packaging papers, market pulp and absorbent hygiene products.
