Ontario’s MOE dictates clean-up plan for Marathon mill site

A U.S. brownfield redeveloper has been directed by the Ministry of Environment (MOE) to prepare to clean up the former Marathon Pulp mill on the north shore of Lake Superior, reports Northern Ontario Business.

The proposal published June 7 on the Ontario Environmental Registry states that Green Investment Group will have to address the closure of an open landfill and bark pile, remove waste wood chips, prepare a demolition plan and begin demolition. The plan must include dismantling and disposal of all equipment, materials and buildings, and removal of all hazardous materials, in accordance with the approved plan, including timelines.

The company must also provide financial assurance to the province, in the amount of $6.8 million.

According to Northern Ontario Business, Greenfield Investment Group reached an agreement with the mill’s former owner, Tembec, last November to buy the contaminated property. The mill has been dormant since 2009.

Green Investment Group acquires and redevelops abandoned or underutilized industrial or commercial sites throughout North America.
