News Paper
Port Hawkesbury taking market downtime

June 22, 2016  By Cindy Macdonald

Port Hawkesbury Paper has shut down production of its supercalendered paper for one week due to poor market conditions. The Nova Scotia mill expects to restart operations around June 27, according to a story on CBC News.

Workers at the mill have been temporarily laid off. Archie MacLachlan is first vice-president of Unifor Local 972, which represents hundreds of workers at the mill. He told CBC News: “We’ve been through a lot of hard times in the paper industry and at our particular mill, and I would say this employer is being smart in curtailing operations to make sure we don’t oversupply the market with paper.”
