Five Canadian forestry companies strongly support the privatization of Canada’s third largest railroad, the British Columbia Railway Co. (BC Rail).
Abitibi-Consolidated, Canfor Corp., Slocan Forest Products Ltd., Weldwood Ltd., and West Fraser Timber Co., which collectively account for a third of BC Rail’s $300 million revenues, said privatizing the railroad will lead to cost-efficiency, competitiveness and improved service.
BC Rail was put up for bids in May by the B.C. government. Canada’s two largest railroads, the Canadian National Railway (CN) and the Canadian Pacific Railway, submitted their bids, as well as a partnership of two American companies, OmniTrax and Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
