Nine large forest products companies among the top 30 Canadian softwood producers of 2002 expressed their support of the softwood lumber deal between Canada and the United States.
Montreal-based forest products giant Abitibi-Consolidated is supporting the deal, as well as BC-based companies: Weyerhaeuser, Slocan, Riverside, Tolko, Lignum, Interfor, Pope and Talbot and Weldwood.
The controversial deal would give Canadian lumber duty-free access to 31.5% of the U.S. softwood market with stiff tariffs above that level. It will replace the previous 27% U.S. duties slapped on Canadian softwood.
