The CBC has reported that Abitibi-Consolidated is looking to develop two new hydro dams on the Exploits River. The company has submitted a proposal to the provincial government that is currently being reviewed.

Abitibi contends the dams could potentially secure the future of the Stephenville newsprint mill while fueling the Voisey’s Bay Nickel with power in order to carry out its nickel processing activities in Argentina.

The CBC also reported that Abitibi confirmed the new power will be worth $13 million a year, but that the money won’t be able to go to work in Stephenville, as any proceeds from the Exploits River legally must go to the Grand Falls Windsor newsprint mill.
