Ainsworth Lumber is taking temporary downtime at its oriented strand board mill in Bemidji, Minnesota. Starting October 6, the mill will stop operating due to reduced customer demand and log shortages. The facility employs 140 people.
“Business demand continues to reflect the severe decline in U.S. housing starts and the credit market issues,” Robert Allen, CEO said of the decision. “Our outlook is that these very difficult conditions will continue for at least the near term.”

Ainsworth plans to reevaluate the closure late this month.
The mill has an annual production capacity of roughly 350 million square feet.
