What common thread binds diverse groups such as global magazine giant UPM-Kymmene Inc., global publisher Time Inc., the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources, the University of Moncton, The Nature Conservancy of Canada and Bird Studies Canada?

Answer: an awareness of birds. That, and collectively receiving the first-ever Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Leadership in Conservation Research Award early this year.

Presented by the SFI in Toronto, the award lauds the aforementioned project participants who have shown collective commitment to what SFI president Kathy Abusow calls “using research to strengthen forest management and deliver real, on-the-ground results . . . Ongoing research and up-to- date science are key to responsible forest management.”

The Birds as Bioindicators of Biodiversity study took flight in April 2007 with the first results expected over the next two to three years.
