Bowater Mersey employees are unexpectedly receiving five weeks off, starting just before Christmas, on December 21. A notice sent to workers confirmed the newsprint mill will close until January 26, 2009.

According to a report by NovaNewsnow.com, vice president and resident manager Bruce Nunn said the downtime is required due to a drop in newsprint consumption and higher manufacturing costs, and that it is part of the company’s previously announced downtime of 90,000 tons of newsprint in the fourth quarter of 2008, and 150,000 tons in the first quarter of 2009.

“Mersey has been fortunate to avoid downtime to this point,” NovaNewsnow.com reported Nunn as saying, “however, the current global economic conditions are now affecting our operation.”
