Process and Control Today has reported that Bowater is going ahead with plans to convert its Calhoun, TX facility from a newsprint producer to churn out higher-margin specialty grades. The company’s board of directors approved the $80 million capital investment needed to carry out the conversion, which should be finished by mid-2006. Once the project is completed, the site will produce 465,000 tonnes of specialty grades and 300,000 tonnes of newsprint every year. The site once produced 730,000 tonnes of newsprint annually.
