With a vote of 95%, members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union of Canada at five Bowater pulp and paper mills acceded to ratify a new labour agreement. The accord takes its cue from the pattern agreement set in 2004 between the union and Abitibi-Consolidated.
"With this strong ratification vote our members have achieved the pension, wage and benefit improvements in the pattern agreement, and the company has secured five years of labour stability," said CEP president Brian Payne. "Now that these negotiations are behind us, we look forward to working with the company to meet the difficult challenges that the industry faces in the coming years."
The five mills implicated in the agreement are in Thunder Bay, Gatineau, Dolbeau, Dahlhousie and Liverpool.
