Ahlstrom Corp., Helsinki, Finland, and Kvaerner ASA, the Anglo-Norwegian international engineering and construction group, have announced their intention to merge their pulp and paper machinery operations in a new 50:50 joint venture. The as-yet unnamed company, which will operate independently of its parents, will have annual revenues of $1.2 billion (US). Acting as chairman will be Roland Martin-Lf, and as president and chief executive officer, Tuomo Rnk.

Clariant International Ltd.’s board of directors, citing a too-great risk if the two companies merged, has not approved the previously announced merger between it and Ciba Specialty Chemicals.

Frost and Sullivan (www.frost.com) has published a study, “North American Pulp and Paper Chemical Markets,” which discusses in detail, among other things, the implications of the recent EPA Cluster Rule.

The European Commission has given the green light to the planned merger between Stora and Enso. The government regulatory agency’s approval comes with the usual set of conditions, to ensure there remains a competitive marketplace.
