Unifort Inc., St. Leonard, QC, has closed the Tripap uncoated paper mill in Trois-Rivires, QC. The closure, which took place on July 29, has affected 175 permanent jobs and 32 part-time jobs. The mill has suffered repeated major financial losses, coupled with weak demand for its products and outdated equipment — all conspiring to make it a target as its parent, Unifort, finds ways to restructure.

Nexfor Inc., Toronto, ON, has inked a deal to buy the assets of Juniper Lumber Company Ltd. of New Brunswick. In the transaction, Nexfor gets an I-Joist plant, a sawmill and 106 000 hectares of forestland under management through Crown licenses and sub licenses. The agreement is also subject to other approvals, including transfer of Juniper’s forest licenses by the New Brunswick government. Cost of the acquisition, which is expected to close in late August, was not disclosed.
