Dr. Heather Trajano of the University of British Columbia and Dr. Rodger Beatson of the British Columbia Institute of Technology will receive a $75,000 grant under the Canfor Pulp University Grants Program to support their project on recovery of hemicellulose monomers and oligomers from pulp mill waste streams for use as strength additives in paper products.
The award provides $75,000 to support their research over three years.
“Canfor Pulp is pleased to provide financial support for what we see as cutting-edge research that will help us derive value from waste streams in our pulp mills,” said Brett Robinson, president of Canfor Pulp. Robinson he presented the award Aug. 28 at a ceremony held at the University of British Columbia’s Pulp and Paper Centre. “We are committed to using the latest technology to improve our environmental and operating performance, and supporting research like this as an important part of that commitment.”
This is the fourth award issued through the program and brings the total dollar value of awards to more than $200,000. The aim of the program, which was launched in 2011 in conjunction with the opening of the Canfor Pulp Innovation Centre, is to foster collaborative research between Canfor Pulp and the Universities of British Columbia and Northern British Columbia. Canfor Pulp also supports other pan-Canadian university research and has made additional investments of more than $400,000 in recent years.
Prof. James Olson, Director of the UBC Pulp and Paper Centre, applauded the Canfor Pulp program, saying, “It is a shining example of how the BC forest industry partners with universities to develop innovative high-value bio-products for the emerging bio-economy.”
