Catalyst pays $4.2 million municipal tax bill

Catalyst Paper has paid nearly $4.2 million in municipal taxes for 2013, according to a news story in the Alberni Valley Times. About $3.8 million of the bill is for the municipal portion of the company’s Port Alberni Mill.

Catalyst and other forest products companies have had long-standing battles with municipalities such as Powell River, North Cowichan, Port Alberni and Campbell River over taxes. The battle escalated to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2010.

According to the company, “uncompetitively high municipal taxes” accounted for about half the company’s losses in the five years leading up to 2009, when Catalyst and other companies decided to rebel and not pay.
