The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada has launched a major project to help ease the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. At its 6th National Convention, the almost 1,300 delegates from across Canada were informed about the union’s intention to raise $500,000 for HIV/AIDS relief in Africa. “This is not charity, it is solidarity,” CEP Qubec administrative vice- president Joseph Gargiso told delegates. “Six thousand people a day are dying in Africa and we have the means to make a difference.” The money will be channeled through the CEP Humanity Fund which union members support through payroll deduction of one cent per hour.
