China has become the world’s top producer of paper, outpacing the United States, according to an article appearing on the ForestWeb industry information service which in turn cites data from ChinaPaperOnline. China produced 79.8 million tonnes of paper and paperboard in 2008, according to Zhao Wei, secretary general of the China Paper Association. That compares with U.S. production of 79.6 million tonnes of paper and paperboard in 2008, the article states.
