A 28 year-old contract worker died in an explosion at International Paper’s mill in Redwood, Mississippi.

A 28 year-old contract worker died in an explosion at International Paper’s mill in Redwood, Mississippi.

According to a report by Associated Press, Marcus Christopher Broome died of trauma to the chest from the explosion, which sent 17 other contractors to a hospital on Saturday, May 3.

The report confirmed that at least 400 employees, some of whom were contractors, were present at the time of the explosion.

Spokeswoman for International Paper Amy Sawyer said in a statement that the explosion took place when the facility’s boiler was being started, after the mill’s yearly maintenance shutdown, AP reported. The contract workers had been hired to help with the restart.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown and officials are investigating.
