Domtar leveraged its Plymouth, N.C. mill’s existing infrastructure to start a lignin separation plant. While lignin is most commonly used as a carbon-neutral source of fuel, modern technology allows it to be made into a wide range of sustainable products, including coating, natural binders, plastics and resins, according to Domtar.

The barge unloading and conveyor project took place at Domtar’s mill in Hawesville, Ky. This one-mile-long conveyor belt from the banks of the Ohio River straight to the mill enabled the company to directly deliver wood chips, eliminating 54,000 trips by wood chip delivery truck. The result is drastically reduced truck traffic and related congestion and pollution.
