The future of AbitibiBowater’s mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, NF, and the economic security of its employees won’t be decided for several more weeks. According to a recent report by the Toronto Star, the provincial government pledged to render a decision on the fate of the mill before the end of the year.

The Star reported provincial natural resources minister Kathy Dunderdale as saying to AbitibiBowater’s senior vice president of North American newsprint operations that the community is entitled to a decision. “What I said to Mr. Rougeau was that the people who work at the mill, as well as the communities, are under a tremendous amount of pressure. They have a right to hear from the company…and that should happen sooner rather than later,” the Star reported.

Unionized mill employees recently voted to reject what AbitibiBowater presented as its final offer for the mill, which proposed a restructuring plan that would cut roughly 170 jobs.
