Delays led to decision to expedite Boat Harbour cleanup: province

Nova Scotia’s environmental agency leading the Boat Harbour remediation says delays with technology in Northern Pulp’s decommissioning plan led to the province’s decision to expedite the cleanup process.

The CBC reports that Nova Scotia Lands planned to begin cleaning up the settling ponds at the shuttered mill’s effluent treatment facility in 2022, following Northern Pulp’s provincial order to extract the initial layer of sludge.

But Ken Swain, provincial government project manager, tells CBC that the mill was challenged by the technology and plans required to proceed with the cleanup, and that their cleanup phase may have lasted into 2023.

Cleaning up the first layer of sludge to keep the project on track will cost an additional $19 million, the province says.
