Mixed reaction to the softwood lumber settlement isn’t restricted to the Canadian side of the border. A statement issued by the American Consumers for Affordable Homes (ACAH) expresses the outrage some U.S. citizens are feeling at news of the settlement.

“The devil is in the details,” the ACAH said. “We are hopeful that this framework will falter and a more thoughtful approach will be reached over the next several months.”

The organization, an alliance of national organizations and trade associations in the U.S. contends the deal ignores U.S. consumer interests. “We are completely shocked that government officials in Canada and the U.S. forced through an eleventh-hour negotiated framework for a bad deal to settle the softwood lumber dispute.”
