Domtar has carried out partial closures at its Cornwall mill that were announced in December, 2004. The PM6, a sheeter and the pulp mill at the facility all closed for an indefinite period of time, on March 8th. Although many people have been relocated to other Domtar operations, roughly 380 jobs were cut. Senior communications advisor for the mill Patrice Bourgoin confirmed that challenging market conditions are entirely responsible for the decision to shut down these operations. "We’re dealing with very difficult market conditions," he said. "This was the only reason for the closures. So, other mills will supply our markets for pulp and for the products made on PM6 and the sheeter," Bourgoin added.
