Domtar was sentenced on Dec. 17, 2013, for violating the Fisheries Act by exceeding the regulatory limits for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in the effluent of its mill at Espanola, Ont. The offences occurred in December, 2010.

Domtar was ordered to pay $75,000, of which $67,500 will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund.
The company pleaded guilty to one count pursuant to subsection 36(3) of the Fisheries Act.
