An explosion at a UPM facility in Pietarsaari, Finland, will require six days of work to repair the damage. On December 28, an explosion in the pipe of a chemical recovery plant caused extensive damage to the lower section of the pipe, a report by Lesprom Network confirmed. No one was injured in the blast.

The company explained diluted odour gases filtered into the pipe instead of the furnace in the recovery boiler. Start-up is scheduled for January 4, 2009, and the damages are estimated to cost 500,000 euro.
