After a weekend-long strike at Finnish pulp and paper mills, the country’s forest industry opened for business once again on Monday, May 2nd. Employers had ordered lockouts at several mills and thousands of workers prolonged strikes to demonstrate their disapproval of management policies, and in the hopes of speeding up labour talks. Strikes and a union ban on over time started in April, and the country is expected to lose millions of dollars as a result.
Workers have now returned to their jobs, however, the industry declared it will kick off a two week lockout starting on May 18th if an agreement isn’t reached in the negotiations.
