An explosion and a fire damaged a production line at Tembec’s Temcell high-yield pulp mill in Temiscaming. No injuries were sustained as a result of the accident.

One of the two production lines at the mill will be idled until it can be repaired, which will reduce the facility’s production to 400 tonnes per day, or 50% of its production.

“At this time, we expect that production will return to normal levels in approximately 30 days,” Yvon Pelletier, executive vice president and president of the company’s pulp group said. “Our priorities are now to conduct a thorough investigation of the cause of the event, complete the repairs as quickly as possible and minimize any supply interruptions to our customers.”

The company expects costs associated with buying replacement equipment, repairs and higher manufacturing costs, to reduce its earnings by roughly $5 million in the March 2007 quarter.
