Abitibi-Consolidated is taking its Grand Falls-Windsor, NF mill out of commission for three weeks, Forestweb reported. The newsprint mill will close for a total of 21 days in order to allow time to make repairs after a papermachine caught fire the week of June 18.

The company originally anticipated the damage would only result in two to three days of lost production. However, as Forestweb confirmed, Abitibi is now putting into effect an emergency, temporary shutdown of both machines to make the necessary repairs.

The story further reported that workers are being encouraged to use vacation time during the shutdown, or to apply for employment insurance benefits.
