Gas leak at Howe Sound Pulp & Paper Mill prompts immediate evacuation

May 16, 2022  By P&PC Staff

Paper Excellence’s Howe Sound Pulp & Paper Mill in British Columbia was reportedly evacuated on the morning of May 12 for around two hours due to a gas leak.

In a social media post, the mill explained that there was a release of condensates (liquids related to its boiler operations) at Howe Sound Pulp and Paper. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it had to be evacuated for around two hours.

The mill noted in its statement that eight of its employees were tasked to the hospital for observation after their exposure to the gases that the condensates release.

The mill stopped the leak in the morning of May 12. It is putting a solution in place to avoid a recurrence and is returning to normal operations.

The mill also clarified that sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas is not a component of its boiler condensates and has not been stored or used on-site for more than seven years.
