According to the Globe and Mail, Port Alice Specialty Cellulose has been declared bankrupt, further jeopardizing the future of the former Doman pulp mill. The bankruptcy allegedly resulted from a refusal on behalf of the B.C. Supreme Court, who declined to extend the period during which the company was protected from creditors. The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, which represents 320 Port Alice employees remained optimistic, according to the Globe, claiming confidence that someone would step up and purchase the mill prior to the liquidation of its assets.
