September 22, 2015  By Cindy Macdonald

A female employee of Domtar was killed in a railcar accident on Sept. 18 at the company’s pulp and paper mill in Ashdown, Ark.

A local TV station, KSLA, reports that some train cars were apparently too tall when a train backed into a loading area, striking a building.
The deceased woman is Velma Marie Perkins. She was an equipment helper on the switch engine in the shipping department, and had worked for Domtar since 1991.

Domtar’s manager of communications and government relations, Tammy Waters, made a statement to local media. “Today Domtar is mourning the loss of one of our employees in a railcar incident at our pulp and paper mill in Ashdown, Arkansas. We are working closely with emergency personnel and local authorities to actively investigate and manage the incident.”

In Canada, Domtar is widely known for its emphasis on safety in the workplace.
