Bringing the forest to school

For the ninth consecutive year, the Canadian Lumbermen’s Association Forestry Teachers Tour will be held at the Canadian Ecology Cente near Mattawa. Providing an opportunity for educators to learn about forestry from a number of different viewpoints, this year’s group will visit a mill, climb a fire tower, a heritage logging museum, evaluate active harvesting and other activities.

“As a forestry education and science centre, we are providing unbiased opportunity for teachers to view the forest industry,” said Bill Steer, general manager of the CEC. “Trees are our largest plants and wood fibre is truly a renewable resource, a good example of the term sustainability.”

The teachers will visit Tembec’s facility in Temiscaming, where the group will be hosted.

“The importance of forestry to our community exceeds 100 years,” notes Temiscaming mayor Philippe Barette. “Having teachers visit Tembec and our town is a wonderful opportunity to emphasize the importance of forestry, jobs and the environment.”
