Mills in the eastern states of Virginia and North Carolina were not spared by the fury of Hurricane Isabel last week.
International Paper Co. closed its Franklin, VA, mill on Thursday, before the “storm of the century” approached. The mill lost power during the shut down process. Restarting operations were started Friday and completed Saturday.
IP’s mill in Roanoke Rapids, NC, was also shut down on Thursday, but restarted on Friday.
Smurfit-Stone’s two containerboard mills in Hopewell and West Point, VA, both lost power and were shut down on Thursday.
Several pulp and paper mills were not affected, but suffered minor damages due to strong winds.
