Paperloop, the parent company of Pulp & Paper International and Pulp & Paper Europe, has hired Graeme Rodden as the company’s new European editorial director. Prior to joining the paperloop editorial staff, Rodden was editor of Pulp & Paper Canada.

The board of directors of Metso Corp. has appointed Matti Khknen as the President of Metso Automation, while Arto Aaltonen moves to executive vice president of Metso Paper.

ABB has made two appointments recently. Warwick Johnston has been named ABB market segment manager for communications paper and Mike Dowling the marketing segment manager for packaging.

Caleb Fort and Edgar Lawton III were recently inducted into Sonoco’s board of directors after a nomination at the company’s annual shareholder’s meeting. Terry Sueltman was appointed staff vice president of purchasing and logistics for the company.

Gary Thomson has been chosen as the successor for Barbara Horne as the editor-in-chief of ipw-International Paperworld, Heusenstamm.

Three new corporate-level posts have been created by Madison Paper Industries: E. Russell Drechsel as executive vice president and chief operating officer; Francis X. Flood as executive vice president and chief financial officer and Christopher C. Bean as vice president engineering, maintenance and utilities.

Motion Canada, a division of Motion Industries Inc., announced the promotion of Michelle Fillion to controller of Motion Canada.

STFI has named Lic. Eng. Pia Wgberg to be their new head of marketing. Wgberg will take up her position on January 1, 2002. Pia Wgberg currently works with intelligent products research for SCA Packaging Research in Sundsvall, Sweden.

PAPTAC presented Jan Sundholm of KCL, Finland, with the Arne Asplund Mechanical Pulping Award for his work on reducing energy consumption in mechanical pulping. He was also instrumental in setting up the pilot plant at KCL.

PAPTAC also presented an award during the Canada-wide Science Fair, the premier event of the National Science Fair Program of Youth Science Foundation Canada, to Meghan Longpre from LaRonge, SK, for her project “Wipe It Up!”, a study of paper towel performance vs. price.

The pulp and paper community lost a great friend and coworker in Jan Bergstrm, who passed away on the 16th of September this year. He had been President of STFI, the Swedish Pulp and Paper Research Institute, between 1985 and 1989, beginning the extensive work with the restructuring of STFI that continued throughout the 1990s. The Swedish government had awarded him an honorary professorship by in 1987. After his retirement, he continued to serve as an expert and advisor, to STFI as well as other organizations.
