Interlake Acquisition Corp. Ltd. pleaded guilty in February to six charges of failure to comply with Ontario’s Municipal and Industrial Strategy for Abatement (MISA) regulation for the pulp and paper sector.
The Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines, ON, established a $5,000 fine for each count, bringing the total to $30,000.
Three charges are for failure to report test results to the Ministry of the Environment indicating that process effluents from the plant had been acutely lethal to rainbow trout. Two of the charges are for failure to control the quality of the company’s process effluent to avoid such acute lethality. The sixth charge is for failure to file a quarterly report on effluent quality within the prescribed time.
The offences occurred between February 21 and May 28, 2001.
