J.D. Irving Ltd. recently announced a decision to pump $220 million into its Saint John, NB paper mill. The company has indicated the expenditure will safeguard the mill and the 350 jobs it supplies, as well as lead to the creation of an additional 600 jobs, in a variety of capacities.

The money will see the installation of the first OptilLoad TwinLine Calendar to produce high-end specialty grade SCA+ papers. Irving is moving away from the production of newsprint to focus on glossy catalogue and magazine papers.

The upgrade will be completed over a span of three years.
