The Communications Energy and Paperworker’s union is calling on the Ontario government to establish a job protection commissioner, saying the province could save thousands of jobs.

“I know that if we had something like a job protection commissioner in place over the last two years, we might have saved several thousand jobs in the forestry sector alone,” said Ontario region vice president Cec Makowski.

The idea comes on the heels of proposed legislation by the NDP concerning job protection and creation, a package that won steadfast CEP approval. “The legislation proposed by the NDP yesterday would guarantee us a chance at saving jobs before the plant gates are locked forever,” Makowski said.
