Kruger Products’ Gatineau plant recognized for energy efficiency with CEM award

December 16, 2021  By Sukanya Ray Ghosh

Kruger Products received a 2021 Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Energy Management Insight award for efficient energy management at its Gatineau, Que. plant.

This international award celebrates ISO 50001-certified organizations that have provided a case study to share their experience, which will be included on the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) website as an inspiration and resource for businesses, governments and other organizations.

The award is presented to companies that demonstrate clean energy leadership, showcase how energy management projects deliver diverse benefits (including identifying operational efficiencies) and help reduce environmental footprints.

“The ISO 50001 standard allows our team members to take control of energy use to continually reduce costs and emissions, and identify operational abnormalities much earlier than before,” said Daniel Morneau, general manager of Kruger Products Gatineau. “These real-time demand-response capabilities and energy analytics have enabled us to reduce 38, 800 metric tons of CO2 over 5 years.”

Addressing climate change is an imperative at Kruger Products and is a key element of “Reimagine 2030”, its sustainability plan to reduce its environmental footprint even further. Within its manufacturing operations, mitigation efforts focus on improving energy efficiency, deploying GHG mitigation technologies, and using renewable energy. In 2019, their Gatineau plant achieved ISO 50001 certification for energy management. Kruger Products was the first company in Canada to receive this certification from the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ).

“As an industry leader, we believe it is time to think bolder, move faster and be more agile to advance social impact, protect the environment and continue to grow as a business,” said Steven Sage, vice-president of sustainability, Kruger Products. “Our 400 Gatineau plant employees, and the entire Kruger Products team, are honoured to be recognized for our energy management, approach to sustainability, and resource conservation so that we can continue to make a positive difference far into the future.”
