Kruger has contracted Nexterra Energy to supply its tissue mill in New Westminister, BC with a biomass gasification system. The first of its kind in the pulp and paper industry, the system will convert locally sourced wood residue into ‘syngas’ that will be fired directly into a boiler instead of natural gas.

The installation will produce 40,000 lbs/hour of process steam, displacing roughly 445,000 gigajoules of natural gas every year – the equivalent of the amount of natural gas needed to heat 3,500 Canadian homes in a year.

The investment will lower the mill’s costs, while reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. The system will also reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions emitted by the plant by more than 22,000 tonnes per year.
