Lack of railway service slows production in Paper Excellence’s Meadow Lake mill

February 11, 2022  By P&PC Staff

Paper Excellence announced that its Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan BCTMP mill is facing an indefinite production slowdown caused by the repeated lack of railway service.

“While we remain committed to servicing our customers’ needs during this slowdown, we are extremely concerned about this railway situation and hope that it can be resolved soon,” said Stew Gibson, vice-president of operations and logistics.

The Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp mill employs 190 people and contributes over $1 million daily to Canada’s economy, says Paper Excellence. The mill is on CN Rail, which has failed to transport Meadow Lake’s pulp production to ports for months. The mill has exhausted local storage facilities.

The company stated that it plans to return the mill to its full production capacity after reliable railway service is reestablished.
