Workers who will lose their jobs when Catalyst’s groundwood pulp mill in Port Alberni closes at the end of the month, might be able to secure other jobs by then.

According to a report by the Chronicle BC, there is a possibility that roughly 60 of the laid-off workers will find jobs at the company’s Crofton mill. The Chronicle confirmed Catalyst vice president of operations for Port Alberni Mike Putzke as saying interviews are set to begin the week of September 25 for trades and entry-level positions.

“The Crofton operation is the only location that is doing any hiring,” the Chronicle reported him as saying.

Putzke also said that workers who choose not to move over to the other facility would be forced to renounce their mill seniority.
