Louisiana-Pacific has shut down two Quebec mills. Operations at its oriented strand board mill in St. Michel des Saints, which provides jobs for 218 people, will prompt the closure of an adjacent sawmill, which employs 104 people and shares wood and energy resources with the OSB facility.

“LP’s St. Michel des Saints OSB mill is losing money due to an unfortunate combination of factors: high wood costs, high transportation costs, unprecedented increases in fuel prices and the strong Canadian dollar,” the Montreal Gazette reported executive vice president of OSB Jeff Wagner as saying. “These costs, combined with the recent steep decline in OSB prices, made this decision necessary,” he added.
