Canfor is closing its last sawmill in Mackenzie, BC. The facility will close down on Thursday, June 12, and the planer will shut two weeks later. A total of 200 mill employees will be put out of work as a result.
The Mackenzie sawmill is one of the last mills still in operation in the area, The Prince George Citizen confirmed. The last six months saw the closure of the Pope & Talbot pulp mill and paper mill, as well as two AbitibiBowater sawmills.
More that 1,200 forestry workers have lost their jobs in Mackenzie, a community of 4,700 people.
Canfor cited poor lumber markets and ongoing production curtailments as catalysts for the closure.
