New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord announced a $5 million assistance package to try and prop up UPM Miramichi, the CBC reported.

Included in the deal are tax savings, abated stumpage fees, employee training programs and a $1.5 million forgivable loan to help the company out in its attempts to increase competitiveness and cost efficiency.

The money is part of the $250 million assistance package for the forestry industry the provincial government announced in December 2005.
