A recent story in the Edmonton Journal confirmed that despite harshly cold winter temperatures in Alberta, the Mountain Pine Beetle proved resilient to the weather.

While the cold did manage to obliterate many of the insects in the northern part of the province, in particular near Whitecourt and Slave Lake, many of the beetles survived, and in numbers that government and researchers did not anticipate, the Journal further reported.
