NewPage buyer making progress on electricity deal

The company negotiating to buy the idled NewPage Port Hawkesbury paper mill in Nova Scotia has reached a tentative deal with the provincial electric utility, reported the Canadian Press on April 27, via CBC.ca.

The agreement between Nova Scotia Power and Pacific West Commercial Corp. still has to be approved by the Nova Scotia Utilities and Review Board.

According to Canadian Press, Premier Darrell Dexter has said that once the electricity rates are set, the government will start discussing other issues, such as Crown timber rights.

The labor issue has been settled, with unionized workers voting earlier this month to accept Pacific West’s contract offer.
