Abitibi-Consolidated Inc., Montreal, QC, has named vice-chairman RON OBERLANDER as interim chairman until a successor to MICHEL DESBIENS, who resigned, is found. Oberlander is a former chairman and chief executive officer of Abitibi.

University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, has named JACK SADDLER, as dean of the faculty of forestry. Since 1998, Saddler has served as head of the department of wood sciences. He also holds the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)-Industry Chair of Forest Products Biotechnology.

UPM-Kymmene Miramichi Inc., Miramichi, NB, has named PHIL RIEBEL as its environmental director.

Laperrire & Verreault Groupe has appointed GRALD TREMBLAY to its board of directors. Tremblay is president of the centre of excellence at University of Montreal’s business school, Hautes tudes Commerciales. As well, the company has appointed MARK R. DIETER PETER, chairman and chief executive officer of Concert Industries Ltd., Vancouver, BC, has been named the 2000 Pacific Region Entrepreneur of the Year in the manufacturing category. The award is given by management consulting firm Ernst & Young. As well, Concert has appointed CHERYL GEORGE as director of sales for one of its subsidiaries, Concert Airlaid Ltd.; and DR. CHRISTOF BRUHN as director of sales for its German subsidiary, Concert GmbH.

NSK-RHP Canada Inc., Mississauga, ON, has promoted STEVEN YEUNG to director of engineering.

Fraser Papers, Stamford, CT, has appointed WILLIAM R. MANZER as vice-president, east operations.

ANWAR CHITAYAT, founder and former chief executive officer of Milwaukee, WI-based Anorad Corp., a Rockwell Automation business unit, has been awarded the 2000 SEMI Award for Enabling Equipment.
