Weyerhaeuser Company, Federal Way, WA, has merged three of its Canadian subsidiaries — Weyerhaeuser Company Ltd., Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. and Green Forest Lumber Ltd. — under a new banner, Weyerhaeuser Company Ltd., Vancouver, BC. Its Saskatchewan operations, Weyerhaeuser Saskatchewan Ltd. and Saskfor MacMillan Ltd., will continue as wholly owned subsidiaries of Weyerhaeuser Company.

Vinings Industries Inc. of Atlanta, GA, has signed an agreement to acquire the North American Pulping Additives business of Raisio Chemicals Americas of Vancouver, BC, including its manufacturing plant in Prince George, BC. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Sulzer Medica of Switzerland has acquired the pump assets of A. Ahlstrom Corp. of Finland — Ahlstrom Pumps — for about $200 million (EUR 145 million). Ahlstrom said it’s unloading its pump business to concentrate on specialty papers, fibre-web materials and flexible packaging.
Bowater Inc. will sell newsprint on the PaperExchange Web site. The companies also agreed to integrate their information systems with the goal of giving customers access to Bowater’s production and distribution systems. Bowater has also made an equity investment in the paper site.
The federal government is giving $90 000 to researchers at Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada to look at how climate change affects the health and productivity of trembling aspens in the Prairie provinces. The trees are suffering, in some parts, from severe dieback and reduced growth.
