Catalyst permanently shuts paper machine

August 3, 2016  By Cindy Macdonald

Catalyst Paper has permanently shut down PM 9 at the Powell River mill. The paper machine had been indefinitely curtailed since December 2014.

A company statement says that Catalyst “continues to focus on revitalizing the Powell River mill for the future.”

PM 9 is one of three paper machines at the Powell River site. Back in November 2014, Catalyst Paper said the temporary shutdown of PM 9 was market-related, due to a lack of orders and a declining market for the paper manufactured on PM 9.

An executive with the union representing workers at Powell River said in 2014 that the company was aiming to bring the mill back to profitability within three years.
